Ethical Animal Tourism: Zoos and Aquariums in the US

Ever wonder whether or not a zoo or aquarium is “okay” to visit? As a lifelong lover of animals, here is my insight into vetting which establishments you can (and should!) support.

What is AZA?

The Association of Zoos and Aquariums is an American 501 nonprofit. The organization was founded in 1924 and is dedicated to the advancement of zoos and public aquariums. Establishments with AZA accreditation are leaders in animal conservation, public education, science, and recreation. They are critical when it comes to species survival plans and collaborate with each other to maintain diverse gene pools for animals in their care. Because of this, they have the ability to reintroduce genetic variety to wild populations. Without AZA organizations, many species would otherwise go extinct!

Note that some zoos and aquariums without the AZA stamp of approval often seek alternative accreditation, but do not be fooled! Some of these alternatives are paid for and just a means to lure in unsuspecting tourists. That’s not to say that these other organizations are not legitimate, but I’d recommend doing further research to be safe. For instance, the Alexandria Zoo in Louisiana is not AZA, but partners with several global organizations to promote the conservation of multiple species. Participation in such programs and evident animal husbandry are positive signs that you can feel good about supporting such an organization!

I have been lucky enough to work for two AZA accredited organizations throughout my entertainment and events career. Childhood trips to SeaWorld Orlando led to a full circle moment working as an Entertainment Tech there during the holiday season of 2014-2015. Being a part of an organization that has rescued over 41,000 sick, injured, and orphaned animals was incredibly rewarding. I also worked as the Events Coordinator at Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium from 2018-2019. There, I hosted event rentals and held fundraisers to support the research efforts of the laboratory team!

What To Do At The Zoo

Once you locate your nearest AZA org, it’s time to plan a visit! One way I love to support AZA orgs is by becoming a member to my local zoo or aquarium. When I was a Florida resident, I was a member of Zoo Tampa. Membership to an AZA org not only grants you local perks, but also gains you free or discounted admission to the other AZA orgs throughout the US!

The perks of being a member are plentiful, but one of my favorites is not feeling rushed knowing I can come back another day! As a result, I have spent hours doodling birds and painting manatees. Pack a little art kit and see how the animals will surprise and inspire you the next time you visit!

Not ready to become a member? Day admission is another way to support your local AZA org! I just recently visited the Caldwell Zoo in Tyler, TX on a day pass. Always an adventure getting to explore a zoo for the first time!

Regardless of your ticket type, I recommend researching special events and animal encounters available before you visit. Zoo Tampa in particular has some once in a lifetime educational experiences available where I have gotten up close and personal with Giraffes, African Penguins, and even Aldabra Tortoises! Fun fact: petting a baby White Rhino feels strangely similar to a basketball that’s collected dust in the garage.

I hope this inspires you to include an AZA org in your future US travel. Check out my favorite adventure travel essentials and start planning today!

What AZA org should I visit next? Sound off in the comments! Have a zoo-tiful day!
